The Monastery of New Jerusalem or St. Gerasimos is the most sacred pilgrimage of Kefalonia and is located in the hinterland of the island, in the plateau of Omalwn. The route from Argostoli to the Monastery is 11 km, through the lagoon of Koutavos, turning right at the 7th km, at the road to Sami. In 1992, the brilliant new church of Saint Gerasimos, was built in the Monastery.This church is a global pilgrimage, where many people are gathered annually. The patron saint of Kefalonia lived as a hermit in the cave of Agios Gerasimos in Lassi for 6 years and the last station was the plateau of Omalon, where he founded the monastery of New Jerusalem. He died on 15 August 1579 and buried on the south side of the church.The fame of his marvels led in taking back his relics, which were found imperishable and entire, fact that certified his holiness. Today the relics of Saint are stored in a double silver urn and are honored 5 times a year (16,23 August,20,26 October and on Sunday of Thomas). Gerasimos Notaras was declared Saint in 1622 by the Global Patriarchate
