The city of Argostoli is the seaport of the old capital of the island, and became the capital of Kefalonia and Ithaki in 1757.It is the commercial and administrative center of the island,characterized by its fine neoclassical buildings and its significant historical and cultural tradition. The city is built amphitheatrically over the lagoon of Koutavos and the area of Ainos which is covered with firs. However, the tourists of the city are gathered in the area of Lassi, where there are many hotels, apartments and restaurants se well as the beaches of Platys Gialos and Makris Gialos.
