Information about Kefalonia - The Ionian island in Greece
Kefalonia is the sixth largest island of Greece and the largest of the Ionian Sea. It covers a total area of 786 square kilometers and it has a shoreline length of 254 km. The population is about 36,527 inhabitants, according to the census of 2001. It falls with Ithaki in the perfecture of Cephalonia with capital Argostoli, and the main towns of the island is Lixouri and Sami. From church view, Kefalonia is a metropolis with 87 parishes. The human presence dates to the Paleolithic era and the first signs of organized life on the island appear in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC. On the island, with its strategic position at the exit of Patraikos gulf, the shifts of the landscape are of exceptional interest, with its fascinating beaches and the beautiful caves.The flora and the fauna are very rich, with many rare species of the animal kingdom finding refuge on the island, such as seals and turtles 'karetta-karetta' which puts the eggs on sandy beaches of Kefalonia. A feature of local life is the competition with the other Ionian Islands and the rivalry between Argostoli and Lixouri, which is treated with humor by residents and visitors.
